Another Dev Team release: Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b for jailbreaking iPhone iPad and iPod Touch

RedSn0w 0.9.9b9

Jailbreak dev group, better known as iPhone Dev Team have again made us happy with a new update to their well known RedSn0w jailbreak tool. This instalment of the jailbreak introduces a number of incremental improvements as well as a support for latest iOS 5.0.1 firmware. Since Apple is lately focused on upgrading iOS, activities from jailbreak community have to be as frequent as never before, just for them to stay in the loop and gain an upper hand over Apple. And RedSn0w is again doing exactly that. Please note: this version of RedSn0w is still only a tethered jailbreak, so whenever you turn off your device o restart it you need to use plug it into your computer and choose “Just boot tethered”.

Most important feature of this jailbreak tool is that it now jailbreaks iPhone and iPad running iOS 5.0.1. In earlier versions of RedSn0w when you wanted to jailbreak you had to point it to the iOS 5.0 firmware. This isn’t the case now, so you can use iOS 5.0.1 right away. Another great help to jailbreakers is the fact that you can use this software for downgrading the firmware on your device with the previously saved SHSH blobs.

If you are still waiting for a untethered jailbreak, you will need to wait for  @pod2g to finish his upcoming untethered jailbreak . According to the latest rumors, Pod2g is busy working on his new solution and it is expected that it could soon become available to all users. However, we wont hold our breath and even weeks could pass before  pod2g releases a stable untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 devices. Stay tuned as we guide you through the world of Apple device jailbreaking.

Siri hacked to work on other devices?

Siri

A group of developers from a group called Applidium announced that they were able to crack security protocols of the famous voice assistant which was launched first time for the iPhone 4S. This could certainly start an avalanche of third party developers and apps for other platforms. Still there are some issues and problems which will be soon more visible. For Siri to be used in this manner, every user will need a unique UDID. UDID stands for Unique Device Identifier which comes in a form of 40 character long number which is different for every iPhone.

Whenever you use your iPhone 4S it will use the UDID constantly. This is same for other devices, meaning you will need a unique UDID from an iPhone 4S. Apple could always block an  identifying number, but if you keep it private for your own use, you should be safe.

Siri runs on iPhone 4S officially but we have already seen it running on iPhone 4 and iPod Touch. This seems like a step in a good direction. Still, Apple could oppose such developments strongly and if we can conclude anything by former actions by Apple against infringements, they will take any measure possible to stop this. They will surely patch the security hole which enables porting Siri with the next iOS upgrade. So if you are an developer and interesting in Siri you should hurry up and test this out while still possible!

iPod Touch White to be launched in October

white ipod touch

It seems that besides the soon to be launched iPhone 5, Apple has prepared more surprises for iOS enthusiasts and users. Apple’s redesigned White iPod Touch will be only a slightly upgraded device with the most visible change being the white color of the device. Beside the color this iPod Touch will have a new screen protective coating and improved light sensors. Other features will be mostly the same as on the 4G version of iPod Touch.

White parts of this new iPod Touch have been seen on the net for the first time in July this year when some images leaked from Apple’s far east hardware suppliers. Those image sparked speculations about the similarities and improvements coming with this model. New iPod Touch could be announced at the same time with iPhone 5 release, probably in the first week of October with first sales starting in middle of the next month. At the same time iPod Nano could also be redesigned to some degree.

All in all different rumors are spinning around, some of them sensible, some conflicting with each other. As always Apple related rumors should be taken with a grain of salt as the only certain thing is that Cupertino company will provide some great products. The only question is when and what exactly. But anyway, this teasing and expectations are an essential part of the game, aren’t they?
