Apple launches iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4S

iO5.0.1 iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S which is a device which some analysts erroneously downplayed as only a slightly improved iPhone 4, has just received its next firmware upgrade by Apple. If you are an iPhone 4S user, you are probably aware of the battery bug issue where the devices battery gets drown out too quickly. This wouldn’t be the firsts time for Cupertino company to release an iOS version a bit prematurely, as small scale software bugs are almost unavoidable, no matter the long testing stages. Earlier even some hardware components of the iPhone were buggy, like in the case with the infamous antenna issue on iPhone 4.

But no matter the rare mistakes, Apple always tries to solve issues as quickly as possible, so iOS 5.0.1 was released for all devices rather quickly. But the experience so far has showed the bug wasn’t solved yet. So, engineers in Cupertino have continued searching for the solution for this irritating problem, and the iOS 5.1 firmware was the next attempt to solve the battery drain issue. iOS 5.1 is currently available to Apple developers only. With iOS 5.1 Apple will try to do two things at the same time: most importantly, they want to get rid of the bug and secondary they need to upgrade Siri voice assistant. Still, no one knows the release date for iOS 5.1.

And now Apple has decided to release iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4S only. This is not something that is usually seen in the Apple world as it represents a strong tendency of fragmentation of devices and iOS versions which is something Apple always wants to avoid. Still if this could prove as a solution for some serious problem, we bet many users will want to upgrade to this firmware version.

You should be warned that this update is available on for iPhone 4S, so if you have some other iPhone version do not expect any changes yet. Lets hope Cupertino company will find a solution for the battery drain with this iOS release.

Unofficial Siri proxy server created, new opportunities to follow

Siri proxy server

iPhone 4S is certainly one of the best products Apple released so far. And with all its shiny hardware, perhaps the most revolutionizing feature of iPhone 4S is Siri, the new voice assistant system by Apple. And Siri became such a hot topic among Apple enthusiasts that many rumors appeared son after its initial release. Some said Siri will become available on other Apple devices, some even going as far as mentioning Siri being ported to non Apple devices.

All in all many people in the field felt the wide potential of Siri in many areas. Recently there we wrote about Siri security layers being cracked by a group of developers and now there is this report about a hacker which posted a video on Siri being ported to a server. This proxy server allegedly could be used for generating custom Siri handlers. In the video this hacker known as @plamoni shows a plugin with particular handles which help him to remotely control a Wi-fi device with his iPhone. You can see this video bellow:

You can see that his proxy server for Siri allows you to see any traffic flow appearing while he asked Siri his question. You can also see @plamoni trying out his server directly from his iPhone without any apparent issue appearing. He was able to simply ask Siri about the temperature in the room and get a straight answer from the app. This was a really cool demonstration of a hacked Siri. Imagine all the possibilities, if this works with a simple thermostat. What else could be added to work with Siri? Your imagination is the only limit! Another important note is that you don’t even need to jailbreak your iPhone 4S for this hack to work! You can see all necessary instructions for setting up such a Siri proxy server of your own, if you are skilful enough that is. We expect to see some great Siri hack in the near future. Stay tuned and we will inform you about the latest tweaks and hacks in the jailbreak community!

iPhone 4S unlock trick

iPhone unlocking is as old as the iPhone itself. Many iPhone owners didn’t accept the costs and other issues which come with a locked iOS device, thus a number of unlocking solutions were developed. Best unlock so far was the Ultrasn0w unlock which was developed and released by the famous iPhone Dev Team.

If you needed to unlock your iPhone for use abroad and on other carriers you had to jailbreak first with RedSn0w, PwnageTools or some other functional jailbreak solution. Another iPhone unlock solution were various unlock Sim cards like Gevey Sim which acted as sim interposers enabling users to unlock even iPhone 4 devices.

When it comes to iPhone 4S, this iPhone model was not unlockable. But apparently there is apparently a new trick which can unlock iPhone 4S. This trick is not yet confirmed as a reliable unlock, but since it does not involve any hardware or software changes it is completely safe. Worst thing which could happen to you is a bit of disappointment. So if you are interested and you have an iPhone 4S which needs to be unlocked check the instructions bellow.

1. First of all you will need to insert a valid AT&T sim card into your iPhone 4S
2. Make a drop-call to AT&T’s service number 611. After you do this immediately put your iPhone 4S into the Airplane mode.
3. Take the AT&T sim card out and insert your new sim card into the sim tray.
4. Disable Wi-fi on your device by ‘forgetting’ all Wi-fi networks on your iPhone.
5. Immediately follow up by turning the Airplane mode off.
6. Your iPhone will now search for available networks.
7. The device will now connect to Edge network of your carrier and this will be confirmed when the E sign appears in the upper left corner of the screen.
8. The signal bar will now appear and you need to tap on ‘Use Cellular connection’.
9. Remove the sim card for the last time and the activation note will appear again.
10. Put your sim card back into the iPhone 4S and your device will connect to your new network.

Here is a Youtube video which demonstrates this unlock hack.Let us know if you successfully unlocked your iPhone 4S with this trick!

Siri knows how close is your iPhone

iFixit logo

Siri is an amazing technology and so is iPhone 4S which is the only device which features Siri at the time being. iFixit, the famous DIY iPhone repair website has just put up an interesting video explaining how exactly Siri knows the position and distance of your iPhone from your face. It turns out that Siri uses an infra-red proximity sensor.

This sensor isn’t something new, as it was existing in previous iPhone models too. The difference is that this time the sensor is always on whenever you activate your iPhone. On your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS this proximity sensor would work only when you start a voice or Skype call on your device.

With iPhone 4S, the infra red proximity sensor is always on whenever your device is activated. As you already know if you got yourself an iPhone 4S, Siri is always ready to serve you. So in order for it to always be prepared, Apple has devised this little trick with the proximity sensor. Kind of interesting thinking by Apple isn’t it? We are sure Android device manufacturers will soon try to copy this hack on their smartphones too, but until then, iPhone 4S with Siri is definitely the best handheld device on the planet. Do you agree?

iPhone 4S pre orders sold out at a record speed

iPhone 4S white

iPhone 4S, despite initial dissatisfaction by some analysts and users alike, has proved many times already that it is a winning product by Apple. Since Apple started recently to release the iPhone 4S to new countries it also became available in Hong Kong. Incredibly, all devices offered  as pre order were sold out in less than 10 minutes which is a record for any device. Apple offered pre orders on Friday, while the iPhone 4S will become available in retail stores seven days later.

Some analysts expect that Chinese market could prove as a crucial one for Apple’s sustained future growth. Last years profits for Apple in China (including PR China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) were more than $4.5 billions which is a considerable growth compared to the same period of 2010, when the profits were 270% lower. China buys approximately 16% of Apple’s overall sales, which is an enormous growth from only 2% back in 2009.

There are already a number of official Apple stores in China. And Chinese government was swift in removing the fake Apple stores from business earlier this year. All in all we think that Apple has a great future in China. Expectancy of high growth will probably prompt Apple to step up their offerings of services and products for this large market, and this will certainly benefit end users in China.

iPhone 4S audio problems appearing

iPhone call

It seems that Apple had in a rush to release the new iPhone model slipped a couple of bugs. One of the known larger issue was the significantly shorter battery life in many new devices. Now it seams that another problem surfaced for iPhone 4S owners. It seems that a number of users have experienced audio problems when calling from their iPhones. This problem appears only when calling out, and if it happens you wont hear anything during the call.

Some users report much worse results than others, things going as bad as more than half of their calls being completely muted out. Interestingly, people who are receiving those calls appear to hear everything said. At the time we are writing this Apple didn’t officially recognise this issue as a real problem. It appears that the problem is persistent as a number of users still have the issue surfacing even after they have received a replacement iPhone 4S. It could be that this issue is not hardware related but rather something related to the device drivers.

Here are some tips which could hepl you solve this problem:

Use Siri to start calls.
Turn the speakerphones on and officially.
Use  your headphones.
Try to dial the number from your keypad.

Let us know if you have and iPhone 4S and if you had call out audio problems.

Pre orders of iPhone 4S sold out after only a day

iphone 4s pre orders sold out

The new iPhone model, iPhone 4S has obviously gathered an immense attention which resulted in large demand, so now all pre orders have been sold out. Apple now estimates all delivery times to be between 10 and 15 days. If you haven’t ordered your new iPhone yet, you can at least try to get one when they appear in Apple Stores on October 14th.

And this is quite something as there were some voices among both ordinary users and analysts airing disappointment with this new iPhone model. Obviously the pre orders have shown how wrong their estimations were. Apple still has everything under control and we are we are quite sure it will be so in the future too. Steve Jobs and his great vision will have a long lasting impact even after his life ended so abruptly only a couple of days ago.

iPhone 4 S: HSPA + compatible or not?

iPhone 4 S HSPA

If you wondered is the new iPhone model compatible with the HSPA + technology, the short answer is yes, it is.

Various rumors have speculated on whether the iPhone 4 S will feature the HSPA + radio for increased data downloading, but after Cupertino company has presented the next iPhone model, they have announced that it would enable download speeds up to 14 mbps but they spoke about it only as an HSPA enabled device. Certainly there are some people claiming that nothing under 21 mbps cant be counted as HSPA + so according to them iPhone 4 S doesn’t fit into this category.

On the other side 3GPP does not require faster speeds as a condition for HSPA +.  Anyway, iPhone 4 S hardware includes Qualcom chips which itself uses 3GPP capabilities, therefore the whole device itself is using HSPA +, not withstanding data downloading speeds.

So the conclusion is that iPhone 4 S is an HSPA + device, but without 21 mbps download speeds which were certainly expected. Apple on the other hand, has chosen to avoid the whole issue without any further comments on the discussion whether their latest device is 4 G capable or not.
