Apple developing an video app for iPad to enter the cable market

iPad video

It seems that Apple is working on another potentially highly interesting project, an iPad only app for video streaming which could directly compete with cable companies. This app which is rumored to be rather strongly influenced by Steve Jobs himself, will challenge established cable companies but with the video being delivered online. This new app could offer a large quantity of content which is an obvious requirement given the huge amount of video already available to cable subscribers.

Some analysts have already commented that this app should as interesting and similar to the concept of Direct TV which is already well proven in tough market competition. Given that Steve Jobs is personally involved with this app it could be expected that it will have some interesting peculiarities, as Steve Jobs never failed to create breakthrough ideas in any of the areas he was invested in.

This new project could be also related to Apple’s new data center, which to illustrate things a bit is almost double the size when compared with Facebook’s data center. In fact it could be that this heavy duty data center is purposefully created for video data sharing only. How will Netflix react to this new challenge?

Another interesting question is will iOS 5 and the next iPhone offer some clues on this new Apple project? We will have to see and wait as iOS 5 and the next iPhone are about to be released. What do you expect to see coming from Apple? Let us know in the comment section!

Dolphin comes to iPad

Dolphin HD for iPad

All in all most people would agree that Mobile Safari is a really good browsing app. But while it offers what most users need there are some drawbacks with Safari too as many functions which are normally available on every browser are lacking with Apple‘s official mobile browser. And if you are among iOS users which need more options available Dolphin could be a great choice. The only problem so far was tht Dolphin wasn’t available for iPad as it was an iPhone only web browser. But now, Dolphin developers have launched an iPad version of the app as well.

If you have already used Dolphin on your iPhone you will use it easily as it is really similar if not identical with the iPad version. As many similar apps ported to the iPad it also bears the HD label. And indeed because of Dolphins many features it is better suited to iPad than iPhone.  One of the most sought options which is finally u available with Dolphin HD is tabbed browsing.

There are other interesting features coming with Dolphin such as opening your favorite website with prerecorded touch gestures. You could for example draw Y with your fingertip and open Yahoo mail. This feature works great and is what we liked the most.

Dolphin HD for iPad offers fast, agile and safe browsing and it will certainly be a strong contender for the title of the best iPad browser around. You can download Dolphin HD from iTunes App Store for free.

iOS tweaks: text to speech conversion with VoiceKeys

VoiceKeys

Every day we are witnessing some new ingenious jailbreak tweak and app. Here is another small but potentially very useful tweak for your device. If you ever heard about Google’s audio recognition services you will know it can convert your speech into text. So now we have a new jailbreak tweak which does something similar for your jailbroken iPhone.  Voice Keys is available for your device in the always useful Big Boss repository. When you install it you will be able to convert your spoken words and sentences into text for yor SMS or email. The conversion isn’t done by this tweak, instead it captures your audio and then uses Google’s own services for this. As always you should keep your voice slow and clear if you want to get a decent result with this.

At the beginning you will get strange results but after some time your experiences will approve as the app will adjust to your voice. This wont be helpful if you are in hurry and need to get something written down fast, but if you have plenty of time you could easily make a good use of this particular tweak. It works for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. You can download it for free if you have Cydia installed, just make sure that you add Big Boss repo to your iPhone sources list. It comes as a free download and it is a great excuse for trying something new with your iPhone.

iPhone jailbreak tweaks: SMS+

SMS + jailbreak tweak for iPhone

A new jailbreak tweak for enhancing SMS capabilities for your devices has surfaced in Cydia. Cydia is available only for already jailbroken iOS devices like iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.  SMS builds on what the native iOS Messages app offers and improves your texting experiences. Something similar was already previously available with Bite SMS but if you like your native Message app more than other options, SMS + could be just what you needed.

And there is another good reason to choose SMS + instead of the competing texting apps: it’s fairly reasonable price of $1.99. When you download and install SMS + from Cydia, jump over to the Settings app and simply adjust and customize the app according to your own preferences. No new icon will appear on your overcrowded home screen.

Here are some of the interesting features of this jailbreak tweak:

  • Text to speech capability.
  • Read messages later.
  • Notifications in the status bar.
  • Time stamps for all text messages.
  • Quick Replay.
  • And more.

You can get SMS + in Cydia App Store. Recommended for heavy text users.

Android susceptible to new threats: malware which records and uploads your calls

Android malware logo

While Apple‘s iOS, Nokia’s Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 OS are completely or almost completely free from malware apps, Android is under heavy attack. There is a new kind of a malicious software which can record and share your calls without your consent. The app looks like a normal, safe app but after you install it, the app downloads an additional file. Afterwards the app will start recording your calls. It is also capable of saving the file in .amr format which can later be uploaded to remote online servers of course without you knowing what is going on. Earlier we have seen troyan apps which have gathered logs on your calls, like the number dialed, duration of the call and so on.

This is certainly a great weakness for Android, as you know there is almost no restrictions for apps entering Android Market, which is the opposite of Apples policies. Apple has strict policies regarding malware apps, and none have being allowed to enter iTunes App Store so far.

You can protect you Android device if you install some anti virus app from the market, but be very very careful, as many malicious apps infect computers and mobile platforms under the guise of security apps! Do your homework carefully before installing an app on your device. Read reviews, ask friends and members of Android user forums, about experiences with apps before you finally install them. otherwise you can easily loose a lot including your privacy and sensitive data.
