Jailbreaking useful not only for Apple devices

dingleberry playbook jailbreak logo

Jailbreaking isn’t a skill which is needed only on those fabulous Apple devices, as it can become quite useful kind of enhancement on other devices too. If you are a frequent reader on our blog ,you will probably be aware how jailbreaking can improve your device in a hundreds of small ways. Besides being able to use a ton of unofficial apps which would never be allowed into Apple app store, you can also enjoy in myriad of small tweaks which can fully customize your iPhone and make it way cooler than possible with only Apple approved apps. Now it seems that other devices and tablets will enjoy such future as well. We are quite glad to inform our readers that RIM’s PlayBook tablet has just being jailbroken for the first time in the history of RIM. Jailbreak developers have finally gained complete access to PlayBook’s QNX operative system.

This is a large success for the jailbreak community as it is known that RIM is very conscious about their enterprise level of security. Developer which made this significant breakthrough is  Chris Wade also known by his nickname @cmwdotme.  @cmwdotme is by the way a well known and reputable iOS jailbreak developer. He decided to call his new jailbreak  ‘Dingleberry’.

You can see in this Youtube a demo of Hulu app on Playbook. As you perhaps know, Hulu is not officially available on RiIM’s Playbook at the time being. It is unclear how will this impact RIM’s image as it has always built its brand on the security it’s devices offer. Many government institutions prefer Blackberries instead of iPhones because of their so far impermeable operative system. All in all we, are sure many PlayBook users will soon have the chance to enjoy in jailbroken devices! Perhaps there will be a Cydia app store for Playbook and Blackberry soon?

You can help the jailbreak community to develop the next jailbreak!

Chronic Dev Team logo

Chronic Dev Team works on a new strategic approach for jailbreak development. Now they decided to ask for help from any willing iOSe user. All you have to do is to simply enable sending crash reports from your device, which could potentially help developers to solve the security puzzle which could then lead to a new, untethered jailbreak for IOS devices.

After the initial rumors that Chronic Dev Team has developed a reliable jailbreak for iOS 5, members of the group revealed that Apple has already closed a number of previously discovered security holes, even before they made the final iOS version available to the public. So apparently they were a little bit too optimistic because Apple didn’t fail like in previous cases to plug the security holes between beta releases and the official version of iOS 5.

If they are to find a new jailbreak solution in the nearby future, jailbreak devs will need some help from average iOS users. To make this real, Chronic Dev Team has just developed a tool which will gather crash reports from users devices and send them to the team for further analysis. The same tool will change your iTunes app so it wont send the same crash reports to Apple. All data gathered in this way will be stored on a web server controlled by the Chronic Dev Team. This procedure could boost the efforts of Chronic Dev Team and enable them to quickly and efficiently discover possible weaknesses which could be utilized for the next jailbreak. This tool should be released very soon, probably in a couple of days. So stay tuned to our blog and we will notify you as soon as we have any news on this interesting story. We certainly hope they will have success with this project. After all we all need the jailbreak, doesn’t we?

iPhone 4S unlock trick

iPhone unlocking is as old as the iPhone itself. Many iPhone owners didn’t accept the costs and other issues which come with a locked iOS device, thus a number of unlocking solutions were developed. Best unlock so far was the Ultrasn0w unlock which was developed and released by the famous iPhone Dev Team.

If you needed to unlock your iPhone for use abroad and on other carriers you had to jailbreak first with RedSn0w, PwnageTools or some other functional jailbreak solution. Another iPhone unlock solution were various unlock Sim cards like Gevey Sim which acted as sim interposers enabling users to unlock even iPhone 4 devices.

When it comes to iPhone 4S, this iPhone model was not unlockable. But apparently there is apparently a new trick which can unlock iPhone 4S. This trick is not yet confirmed as a reliable unlock, but since it does not involve any hardware or software changes it is completely safe. Worst thing which could happen to you is a bit of disappointment. So if you are interested and you have an iPhone 4S which needs to be unlocked check the instructions bellow.

1. First of all you will need to insert a valid AT&T sim card into your iPhone 4S
2. Make a drop-call to AT&T’s service number 611. After you do this immediately put your iPhone 4S into the Airplane mode.
3. Take the AT&T sim card out and insert your new sim card into the sim tray.
4. Disable Wi-fi on your device by ‘forgetting’ all Wi-fi networks on your iPhone.
5. Immediately follow up by turning the Airplane mode off.
6. Your iPhone will now search for available networks.
7. The device will now connect to Edge network of your carrier and this will be confirmed when the E sign appears in the upper left corner of the screen.
8. The signal bar will now appear and you need to tap on ‘Use Cellular connection’.
9. Remove the sim card for the last time and the activation note will appear again.
10. Put your sim card back into the iPhone 4S and your device will connect to your new network.

Here is a Youtube video which demonstrates this unlock hack.Let us know if you successfully unlocked your iPhone 4S with this trick!

Apple releases iOS 5.0.1 beta, RedSn0w jailbreak updated!

RedSn0w logo

Apple has just released iOS 5.0.1 beta version update to solve the battery drain bug which appeared on many new iPhone 4S smartphones. The beta version of iOS 5.0.1 is currently available to Apple developers only. Luckily, iPhone Dev Team is prepared and ready to met any new upgrade with a new jailbreak version. After they have installed iOS 5.0.1 they have announced that RedSn0w jailbreak still works flawlessly for this new iOS version too. If you are among iOS developers and have access to beta version of iOS 5.0.1 you can jailbreak your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS with the latest version of RedSn0w jailbreak solution.

Apple devs which have access to iOS 5 beta have jailbroken their devices. They needed to select the IPSW file for iOS 5.0 instead of the IPSW file of 5.0.1 firmware. Unfortunately the jailbreak is still only a tethered version and not available for users using iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

iPhone dev Team has released RedSn0w 0.9.9 beta 8 which officially jailbreaks iOS 5.0.1 beta. With this version of RedSn0w you don’t need to point the software to iOS 5.

Here is a tweet from @MuscleNerd about the iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak.

Jailbreak tweaks for iPhone: Music controls for Lock Screen

SuperMusic jailbreak tweak for iPhone

Here is another jailbreak tweak from Cydia which will enable you to enjoy more in the powerful capabilities of your iPhone. SuperMusic will add improved controls which will be available directly on your  Lock Screen. It has more than the usual options like play, forward, back and so on. It will enable you to have more control with such options like fast forwarding, rewinding, listing of your music library and more.

While SuperMusic has its merit it could certainly gain by a little effort in the GUI side of things. Another valid critique is that it offers to much commands in a limited area therefore cramping its user interface. We hope that the upgrade of this tweak will help it become a much better tool in the future. If and when they improve the design of the app SuperMusic could become a s standard tweak for iOS music fans. You can get this tweak from Cydia if you have the BigBoss repository added. The cost of the tweak is US $1. SuperMusic is compatible with iPhone iOS 4 and iOS 5.

Did you try out this jailbreak tweak? How did you like it? Let us know in our comments section bellow.

Jailbreak iOS 5 with RedSn0w jailbreak solution!

Jailbreak development community was this time quite fast and almost immediately as Apple released the official iOS 5 firmware, iPhone Dev Team and the rest of jailbreak community have responded with releasing a new, updated version of the software. This time RedSn0w is again only a tethered jailbreak solution, which means that you have to boot up with RedSn0w every time you restart your iPhone for any reason. But this isn’t really a serious issue as it can be done in couple of minutes. So if you plan to get a new iPhone 4S or upgrade your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, you will be able to jailbreak your device and enjoy all advantages jailbreak has to offer. Here is how can you jailbreak your new iOS 5.

Redsn0w 0.9.9b6 jailbreak for iPhone and iPad

RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 jailbreak guide

1. Upgrade iTunes to version 10.5 before you proceed with the process. You need to install iTunes 10.5 if you want to upgrade your device to iOS 5. You can download iTunes directly from Apple’s website and it is available in oth mac and Windows PC version.

2. Download  RedSn0w 0.9.9 b 5. Please note: only Mac version is available at this moment.

3. Plug your iPhone into your computer and start RedSn0w. Click on the “Jailbreak” option and afterwards click on the “Install Cydia” button. Now you will have to put your iPhone in DFU mode (DFU mode stands for Device Firmware Upgrade). If you do it correctly, your iPhone screen should turn black.  RedSn0w will now start it’s trick so wait patiently until it finishes. All needed firmware files will be fetched from Apple’s own servers, so you will need to have working Internet connection on your computer.

4. After RedSn0w finishes the jailbreak it will reboot your iPhone, Now you will need to use RedSN0w to boot the device up, as it is a tethered jailbreak solution only. To do so, plug youriPhone in, fire up  RedSn0w and select only the “Just boot” option. You are done, your iPhone running iOS 5 is jailbroken and you can finally browse the Cydia app store for cool jailbreak apps and tweaks.

Please note: if you need the carrier unlock please do not upgrade through iTunes. Instead, use RedSn0w as it can now build you a custom firmware file without the baseband update just as PwnageTools did in earlier versions.

After you jailbreak you can use UltraSn0w software unlock or alternatively the Gevey sim card to carrier unlock your device.

JailbreakMe source code released to the public

JailbreakMe 3.0

One of the most prominent iPhone jailbreak developers @Comex has stand by his promise and has released to the public the code of his jailbreak tool. This open code which Comex has used to jailbreak more than million iOS devices running iOS 4.3.3 just by visiting his website JailbreakMe.com will enable all interested developers to learn and understand how did he achieve this. Comex has first become famous when he released the first version of JailbreakMe jailbreak a couple of years ago. The solution is based on a PDF vulnerability which enabled hacking of the device. First iOS to be susceptible was iOS 1 fro iPhone and iPod. JailbreakMe 2.0 was able to hack the iOS 4.

Most famous and useful was the latest version JailbreakMe 3.0 as it was able for the first time to jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 on iPad 2 tablet. This was so far the first jailbreak for iPad 2 but was quickly patched by Apple by releasing the upgrade to iOS 4.3.4. Note: if you didn’t upgrade to iOS 4.3.4 you might as well skip this upgrade as it offers nothing new to the users except that it disables JailbreakMe 3.0.

Perhaps other jailbreak developers could learn some new trick from Comex and enable us with some great new jailbreak and unlock solution? Way to go Comex, we applaud you for your skill and for your willingness to share your knowledge for the benefit of all iOS users!

Apple has stopped signing for iOS 4.3.3

iOS 4.3.4 upgrade download

If you didn’t save SHSH blobs for your device with TinyUmbrella you wont be able to restore, downgrade or upgrade your device to this firmware version. As you probably know Apple has decided to release an upgrade to their mobile iOS couple of days ago. The main reason for this upgrade was to block easy jailbreaking through the jailbreakme.com website, as this jailbreak was able to jailbreak even iPad 2 which was impossible to jailbreak with other tools like RedSn0w, PwnageTools and other.

Also users which decided to experiment with iOS 5 beta will have trouble downgrading their device. Again, if they weren’t careful enough and didn’t save SHSH blobs on their devices they wont be able to downgrade to 4.3.3. Good news for them is that they still can downgrade the firmware but unfortunately they will be able to restore only to iOS 4.3.4.

iPhone Dev Team has published an updated version of RedSn0w jailbreak which is able to jailbreak 4.3.4 firmware but the jailbreak is only a tethered one, meaning that every time you turn of your device you’ll need to boot it up through the same RedSn0w jailbreaking process.

If you didn’t upgrade your device yet, you shouldn’t do it at all. At this moment this update wont benefit you in any way, as it doesn’t introduce any improvement. The only reason Apple has upgraded was to block users from jailbreaking their devices. SO if you care about the jailbreak and unlock do not upgrade! Also it is highly advisable to save the SHSH blobs on your device while it is still possible. You can find instructions on how to use TinyUmbrella for this in our blogs archive, alongside with many instructions and guides for jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone or iPad.
