Dolphin comes to iPad

Dolphin HD for iPad

All in all most people would agree that Mobile Safari is a really good browsing app. But while it offers what most users need there are some drawbacks with Safari too as many functions which are normally available on every browser are lacking with Apple‘s official mobile browser. And if you are among iOS users which need more options available Dolphin could be a great choice. The only problem so far was tht Dolphin wasn’t available for iPad as it was an iPhone only web browser. But now, Dolphin developers have launched an iPad version of the app as well.

If you have already used Dolphin on your iPhone you will use it easily as it is really similar if not identical with the iPad version. As many similar apps ported to the iPad it also bears the HD label. And indeed because of Dolphins many features it is better suited to iPad than iPhone.  One of the most sought options which is finally u available with Dolphin HD is tabbed browsing.

There are other interesting features coming with Dolphin such as opening your favorite website with prerecorded touch gestures. You could for example draw Y with your fingertip and open Yahoo mail. This feature works great and is what we liked the most.

Dolphin HD for iPad offers fast, agile and safe browsing and it will certainly be a strong contender for the title of the best iPad browser around. You can download Dolphin HD from iTunes App Store for free.

PDF creator for iPhone published by Adobe

Adobe PDF

We all know that Adobe and Apple aren’t in quite good relationships since these two companies are engaged in a continuous conflict over the HTML 5 versus Flash for mobile devices. As you probably know Apple is leading an open crusade against all things Flash, which is made and promoted by Adobe. But it seems that this didn’t stop Adobe from publishing their iOS app for making PDF files called PDF Creator.

This app will enable iPhone and iPad users to view, create and edit PDF files on their iOS devices. Adobe has created their own technology for converting files so they can be as good as those created on the native Adobe Acrobat software. This app will also work with PowerPoint created presentations and will preserve the smooth transitions in the presentations when exported to a PDF file. It will also easily convert rich multimedia content for PowerPoint files.

This app will cost you $10 and the price seems a little bit high, especially since it has only basic functions. A downside of this app is that it doesn’t support iWorks file format and that you cant share your files through Dropbox, you can only email it. But if you relay a lot on Adobe products like Illustrator, Photoshop and if you absolutely need great PDF quality you could easily find this tool to be extremely useful for your daily work.

SMS + jailbreak tweak for iPhone

When you download and install SMS + from Cydia, jump over to the Settings app and simply adjust and customize the app according to your own preferences. No new icon will appear on your overcrowded home screen.

How to restore your tabs if you close them by mistake

Restore Tab Cydia tweak for jailbroken iPhones and iPads

There are a number of Cydia tweaks and apps which at the first look seem unimportant or even ridiculous, but if you ever encounter a small yet bothersome problem, you will often find out that there is already a solution for that particular problem in Cydia. That is why jailbreak is an excellent thing in iOS world.

While Safari, which is the native browser for all iOS devices, is itself a great piece of software it does have some small drawbacks. Safari has enabled users of mobile devices to enjoy surfing the Internet almost at the same level as when surfing on your computer. This is especially so if you have a jailbroken device and you can push Safari over the limits imposed by Apple. With a few tweaks you can download and upload various files as needed, personalize your home page and even use the full screen size option on Safari!

And here comes the latest Cydia improvement called Restore Tab For Safari . This small tweak has a name which explains everything. If you are like most of us a serious iPhone or iPad user you will often have a bunch of tabs open, and from time to time you will by mistake turn your tab off. This happens especially if you are in a hurry and since your iPhone screen is quite small you can often encounter this issue. This is easel solvable on your desktop computer but so far this wasn’t possible on Mobile Safari, that is until now. But after you install Tab Restore for Safari you will definitely forget about this problem. Whenever you open a new tab a small icon will appears at the bottom of the browser which says restore tab. If you accidentally close a tab with important informations, just tap on restore tab and you can continue with your work.

This tweak is available in Cydia and it costs $0.99. You can find it in Big Boss repo so add it to your list of sources if you already didn’t do so.

Here is a demo of the tweak.

Android susceptible to new threats: malware which records and uploads your calls

Android malware logo

While Apple‘s iOS, Nokia’s Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 OS are completely or almost completely free from malware apps, Android is under heavy attack. There is a new kind of a malicious software which can record and share your calls without your consent. The app looks like a normal, safe app but after you install it, the app downloads an additional file. Afterwards the app will start recording your calls. It is also capable of saving the file in .amr format which can later be uploaded to remote online servers of course without you knowing what is going on. Earlier we have seen troyan apps which have gathered logs on your calls, like the number dialed, duration of the call and so on.

This is certainly a great weakness for Android, as you know there is almost no restrictions for apps entering Android Market, which is the opposite of Apples policies. Apple has strict policies regarding malware apps, and none have being allowed to enter iTunes App Store so far.

You can protect you Android device if you install some anti virus app from the market, but be very very careful, as many malicious apps infect computers and mobile platforms under the guise of security apps! Do your homework carefully before installing an app on your device. Read reviews, ask friends and members of Android user forums, about experiences with apps before you finally install them. otherwise you can easily loose a lot including your privacy and sensitive data.

New Yorker already sold more than 20 000 subscriptions for New Yorker iPad app

New Yorker iPad app

One of the most important weekly magazines in US has already sold more than 20 000 yearly subscriptions for their iPad app after the remodelling of their iPad subscription strategies. More thank 20 000 readers  on iPad tablets have purchased subscription for $60 which comes with the news on society and literature. The app also comes in a weekly format and this is preferable to approximately 6000 buyers which have to pay $4.99 for each single issue.

New Yorker has reaped most subscribers among the magazines and this could be because of the nature of the magazine itself. New Yorker was always heavy on writing, and the app designer have avoided unnecessary interactive content and annoying graphics, which is often problematic with online content. Could this show the future of online magazines and their editorial styles? We think the answer is yes. Hopefully we are going back to the conditions where it matters more how the text is written than how is it presented.

In the words of Pamela Mafei McCarthy, one of the magazines key editors, what they did was to create an app which focuses solely on reading. Some graphic details are still available inside it, but the focus is completely on high quality writing and articles which are viewable in a clean and readable way. Good thinking!

iTunes gets redesigned user interface and improved cloud integration

iTunes 11 logo

According to the latest rumors coming from the Cupertino, California based company we will in the near future see a new, improved version of iTunes software. iTunes 11 should bring a mayor change in the UI area as well as improved cloud integration. If we can can conclude anything from the past and being aware of Apple‘s amazing designing capabilities, we can expect new iTunes to become even more fabulous and intuitive.

Being clean and simple is one of the hallmarks of all Apple designs. And since the cloud is the latest buzz in the online technology world and according to rumors on mayor companies working on their own cloud services, Apple will want to offer much higher integration in their own cloud, dubbed iCloud. So instead of iTunes being an app for browsing through apps and other data, it will integrate the Store  into the app itself, just like some other apps are doing right now, like Spotify for example.

It could also be that the cloud backups will become a reality with this version of iTunes 11. So if you decide you need to backup your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad tablet, the same backup will be stored on your computer as well as in the cloud. This also means that your app data will get saved in the cloud, so if you reach a particular level in some cool game, that data will get synced to the cloud and afterwards into your own iTunes database.

This rumor isn’t confirmed, and as always should be taken with a grain of salt, but it does seem plausible, since Apple is continuously increasing its efforts to offer much more through their own iCloud services.
