What is 3G

What is 3G?
The meaning of 3G and 4G Explained.
The new generation iPhones are known to work on 3G Speed.
In simple terms, 3G stands for “3rd Generation”.

With 3G, one can enjoy video calling, high-speed video streaming,
and mobile internet 6 times faster than the current GSM / GPRS networks.

First generation iPhones will only work via the slower GSM/GPRS networks, while the new 3G iPhone can operate on 3G speeds.

More specific:

3G is the  ITU (International Telecommunication Union specification) for the Third generation mobile communications technology.
3G offers the highest network speed on mobile devices. Maximum speeds of 2 Mbps can be reached ( on a fixed location) while the device can reach download speeds of 384 Kbps on a moving device.

3G will work over several wireless air interfaces such as GSM, and CDMA ( Please note: the iPhone will never work on CDMA networks ( like Verizon wireless), becourse this radio technology is not compatible with the iphone). The latest  EDGE air interface has been developed specifically to meet the bandwidth needs of 3G.

3G Technology is not available everywhere yet: Most countries in Europe have good 3G networks with large coverage, but carriers like T-mobile in the US can only offer 3G speeds in certain Areas and certain cities.

4G technology is currently in development, and stands to be the future standard of wireless devices.
This Technology will beat the current 3G network speeds multiple times. 4G networks have not been standarised yes, and my expectation is that the 4G networks will become available to the public around 2012.
