Jailbreak instructions: Absinthe for iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S can be jailbroken, courtesy of Chronic and iPhone Dev Team and of course thanks mostly to the person which has discovered the jailbreak exploit: @pod2g. Here are the instructions for jailbreaking iPhone 4S if you are a PC user. Please note: the same jailbreak is available for Mac OS X users and we will write instructions for this very soon. As always we advise you to make a complete backup of all your data just in case something goes wrong, but typically nothing should happen if you follow these simple and straightforward instructions. In a few cases some users have had problems with loosing the images in their Camera Roll after jailbreaking their iPhone 4S.

Step by step Absinthe jailbreak guide:

1. First tasks first: download Absinthe for Windows.

2. Double click the downloaded file and extract it. Click on the Absinthe file to start the jailbreak.

3. When prompted, plug your iPhone into your Windows PC.

4. Now click on the “Jailbreak” button to start jailbreaking your device.

5. You will be now guided through a number of steps which include: Sending the data, restarting, waiting for reboot, preparing the jailbreak and sending off the payload data.

6. You will see the message which informs you that the jailbreak is almost finished.

7. This step is easy. Check your iPhones Springboard and find the new icon named Absinthe on it.

8. When you see a Error popup, go to Settings app and allow VPN. If another Error message appears do not panic as everything is just fine, this is the exploit in action! After a couple of moments your device will reboot itself and you will discover a new icon on your Home screen: Cydia.

That is all. Your device is jailbroken for the first time! You can now proceed and get all those interesting apps which are available only for jailbreak users. Untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 almost ready for launch!

After solving a couple of last obstacles, iPhone Dev Team jailbreak developers have announced on their website that the work on the new jailbreak is almost done. The only reason the jailbreak hasn’t being launched yet are a few, more or less simple bugs which need to be ironed out before making the jailbreak available to the public.

To make this solution work for as many people as possible, developers have worked on parallel tracks. iPhone Dev Team has created a command line interface which will enable users to jailbreak their devices by following a number of simple steps. The reason for doing it in this manner, is that it makes thing easier easier for developers to catch remaining bugs. After this is solved, the jailbreak will be implemented into the new version of RedSn0w jailbreak software. We are sure most users will have to wait for this solution to be added into RedSn0w, as the command line interface is probably too complicated jailbreak tool for average iOS users. Chronic Dev Team on the other side, has implemented Corona jailbreak into an app which works on your PC or your Mac computer.

Jailbreak for A5 devices will be available for iPhone 4S on iOS version 5.0, 5.0.1. Corona will support iPad 2 on 5.0.1 firmware version only. Stay tuned to our blog, and we will inform you as soon as the jailbreak is released! Please note: if you have iPhone 4S you should keep it on iOS version 5.0 if you need the carrier unlock. This unlock should also become available soon, but it will work only for users with the lowest version of the modem firmware!

Apple seeds iOS 5.1 beta 3, Apple certified developers only

Apple has launched the first instalment of iOS 5.1 all the way back in November, and many different things happened in the Apple realm since those days. We have witnessed the breaktrhough of the iOS 5.01 untethered jailbreak, and even better, the jailbreak for iOS 5.01 for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is around the corner, according to many recent rumors. So it comes as no surprise that Apple’s is intensifying their work on new iOS releases. Remember,every new iOS firmware version will require a new jailbreak and possibly unlock. So in this vein, Apple has just launched the iOS 5.1 beta 3 version. What is new with this version?

Third testing version of iOS 5.1 comes only as OTA (over the air update) as opposing to the usual IPSW file download. As with previous beta versions, this one introduces a number of bug fixes and small incremental improvements in the system. Apple plans to release final version of this firmware as a permanent solution to a number of issues with iOS. According to some rumors beta 3 of 5.1 firmware reintroduces the most wanted 3G toggle in the Settings app. If you remember, this was one of problems many users pinpointed when iOS 5 was officially released back in October, 2011. Toggling of your 3G connection should improve your iPhone and iPad battery lifetime,as the Edge connection only is much easier on the batteries, while maintaining your devices connectivity.

As usually, Apple is allowing only certified developers to access this beta version. Anyways if you are not absolutely sure you know what you are doing, you should probably stay clear of the this upgrade. Still, it is fairly easy to get a license from Apple. You’ll need only to pay a yearly fee, and then you will be granted access to all beta version releases. If you are a developer, you can update your device right now. Angry Birds record Christmas downloads

Angry Birds by Rovio, the legendary Birds vs Pigs game has being downloaded for more than 6.5 million times on Christmas day only. This is as people in Rovio say, a phenomenal number of users getting the famous game on their iOS and Android devices. Interestingly, the number of downloads is almost the same as the number of recently activated iOS and Android devices. This could mean that almost all new smartphone or tablet users be it on Android or iOS are downloading Angry Birds on their new devices.

If you follow iOS gaming you will know that Angry Birds is something like a phenomenon in the world of iOS based gaming. It is quite possible that such gaming apps are becoming so widespread and used in so large numbers that they become a symbol of mobile computing.

As an answer to this, Rovio is promising all gameplayers a number of great things coming this year. So get ready and prepare your touchscreens for some more Bird vs Pigs fun!

Apple to launch new, cheaper, A6 based iPad?

According to Taiwanese Apple dedicated blog DigiTimes, Apple wants to release at least two new iPad models. The cheaper version could become available at a tempting price of only $299. According to this rumor, both new tablet models by Apple should run on new A6 processors with the only major difference between those two models being in their display resolution.

It seems that someone inside Apple’s hardware manufacturing partners has leaked this story on two iPad models. One of this models should cater the high end market, while the second $299 priced device should lure the lower end segment of the global market. The better device should have screen resolution in the 2048×1536 range while the other one could use the same resolution as what is now available with iPad 2, meaning 1024×768.

iOS is certainly among best mobile operative systems, if not the best one. Still, some features, while pushed out by Apple can and do irritate large number of iPhone users. After all, iOS is used on millions of devices and users and their preferences certainly aren’t the same. Every one among us has things he prefers and those he more or less deplores. We are sure, most of us jailbreak our favorite Apple devices to upgrade features we enjoy and disable things we don’t enjoy as much. PullToDismiss is a jailbreak tweak which prevents the second kind of iOS features.

Whenever you try to read some message, be it an email or a humble SMS, iOS tends to display the virtual keyboard. Zephyr jailbreak app upgraded to 1.0.1

For those of you which do not know what Zephyr is, it is a kind of multitasking gesturing app fro iPhone and iPod Touch. With Zephyrs swiping up for the multitasking switch or quick sweeps from app to app, Zephyr offers a rich world of gesture multitasking on your iPhone or iPdod Touch.

This app was made by a well known jailbreak developer known as @Chpwn, who has just updated his jailbreak app to latest version 1.0.1. This version offers a number of incremental updates and bug fixes. One of the most important updates is the possibility to actually block multitasking gestures in certain apps like Cut the Rope and others where this ability could crash the app.

With Zephyr 1.0.1 you can start using multitasking gestures, almost as same as what is by default available on iPad tablet. You can get this app from Cydia app store for only $2.99. Face recognition patents for iOS, submitted by Apple

Apple is busy,keeping ahead of the competition which seems never being able to really catch up with Cupertino, California company. Relentless innovation and bold business decisions are what keeps Apple light years ahead of any other competing company, which are probably only trying to implement “borrowed” Apple‘s ideas in some kind of Android device, be it a smartphone or some of those unimpressive, generic Android tablets.

Latest patents submitted by Apple mention a way for iOS devices to recognize faces and confirm their nearby presence. Sounds like some science fiction stuff, where your iPad or iPhone scans environment looking for your face ,before it unlocks the device for normal use. Apple’s patents also mention algorithms used for face recognition and methods which will enable the process in different, less favorable circumstances, like when the device is located in some low light environments.

This sounds great, doesn’t it? Such an app on iOS devices could probably be used for many more purposes than what the inventor intended originally. We guess it could become a great addition in various apps and situations, from gaming and productivity, to social networking. So Apple is working on some exciting new technologies, and we will probably see very soon what kind of new wonders will be created by the famous fruit company. How to upgrade your iPhone 3GS firmware and preserve the baseband firmware with RedSn0w 0.9.10

If you are still on a older iOS firmware version but you have decided to upgrade, here is how to do this and preserve your unlockable modem firmware (baseband).

1. First of all you will need to download the stock version of iOS 5.0.1. You can download it here.

2. Download the latest RedSn0w jailbreak tool from here: Mac version or Windows PC version.

3. Start the RedSn0w software on your computer and click on “Extras”.

4. Choose the “Custom IPSW” button.

5. Now you will be prompted to browse to the previously downloaded 5.0.1 firmware file.

6. RedSn0w will now do its thing on the firmware file.

7. After a short wait, this will be done and RedSn0w will save the custom made firmware file in the same folder where you saved the official IPSW file. The custom firmware file you just made will have the contain your original modem firmware (baseband) you wanted to save in order to be able to unlock later with UltraSn0w.

8. After you confirm with OK you will be back on the screen with options again. This time select Pwned DFU mode. This will help you to restore your iPhone to the created custom firmware. Follow the DFU instructions carefully.

9. If your device is indeed in DFU mode, the screen will become completely black. Open your iTunes and press and hold shift and restore. Point iTunes to the custom made 5.0.1 firmware. Itunes will now restore your iPhone 3GS to the custom iOS 5.0.1. You are done and your iPhone is upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 with the baseband preserved. You need also to jailbreak the device before you continue with the unlocking. You can use RedSn0w for this as well.

iPhone Dev Team launches new Pwnagetools, untethered jailbreak available

We have followed fervently any and all news on the upcoming untethered jailbreak for some time, and at last we are quite happy to inform our readers that a stable untethered jailbreak is now available for use. The credits for this jailbreak should go mostly to @Pod2g, as he was the one which has successfully found a reliable jailbreak solution. After he confirmed the jailbreak to be viable, he has shared his findings with developers in the Chronic Dev Team and the iPhone Dev Team. Both groups have quickly followed up and released their jailbreak tools. Chronic Dev Team has added Pod2g’s solution to a Cydia app called Corona, while iPhone Dev Team released a new version of both RedSn0w and Pwnagetools.

If you haven’t upgraded yet to iOS 5.0.1 you should do so before Apple stoops signing this firmware version. Please note: this untethered jailbreak works only for Apple’s iOS devices which are based on the A4 chip. So, only happy owners of iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch (3G, 4G) and finally iPad 1 owners will be using an untethered jailbreak on their devices. iPhone 4S users and users with iPad 2 will have to wait for some new release.
